The first Tracker was powered by a Suzuki 1.6 liter SOHC 4-cylinder engine. It was able to produce 80 horsepower and was available in a convertible, hard top, or an LSi hardtop. The LSi version was a package that offered chrome wheels, air conditioning, and a 3-speed transmission. In 1996, the Tracker’s block was upgraded to the Suzuki G16B engine. It was a 16-valve 1.6 liter engine that was able to improve engine performance to 96 horsepower. By 1998 the Geo company formed a merger with Chevrolet and the Geo Tracker became the Chevrolet Tracker.

What differentiates the Tracker from other light SUVs is that it was built on a small truck chassis and was certified as a light truck. The engine is a light truck engine that is able to go off-road with its 4-wheel drive ability. It is mated with to the transmission with a 2-4 transfer case and has a rugged suspension. The suspension gave the Tracker a ride that was similar to a truck but was noted for its durability during standard or off-road driving.

By 1999, the original Tracker was no longer in production and the second generation was coming on the scene. This Tracker came with a variety of engines that included the 1.6 liter inline-4 that produced 80 horsepower and the 2.0 liter inline-4 that produced 130 horsepower. The biggest engine offered on the second generation Tracker was the 2.5 liter V6 that was able to put out an impressive 155 horsepower. These engines were mated with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission and was offered in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive.

In 2004, the Chevrolet tracker was discontinued in the United States and Canada but was still being sold in Mexico and Brazil. For these countries, the car was redesigned with a new face but was also discontinued by 2008 due to falling sales.
