American Motors (AMC) stumbled on a winner when they introduced the Cherokee in 1983. AMC was a player in the Detroit car scene, but it had a hard time matching sales with the big three. In 1987 Chrysler bought AMC and the designs for a new Cherokee model.

Chrysler sat on those plans since President Iacocca was pushing minivans at the time. While Chrysler was enjoying success selling minivans, Ford was pounding them over the head with big-time SUV sales. The 1991 Ford Explorer was an instant hit. It solidified Ford’s dominance in the truck industry. Feeling the pressure, Chrysler introduced the Grand Jeep Cherokee in 1993. The Monocoque body of the Grand Cherokee gave the Ranger remake a run for its money since the Explorer was a body-on-frame construction.

The 1993 Grand Cherokee offered consumers off-road capabilities and smooth highway ride thanks to its 4.0 litre 190 horsepower inline six engine. The Grand Cherokee’s inline six matched its competitor’s engine size, but the Cherokee needed more to tap into the growing SUV market. Late in 1993 Chrysler introduced the 5.2 litre with 220 horsepower, and that engine was a game changer. Grand Cherokee owners had bragging rights on the golf course since their SUV had a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs.

Chrysler sweetened the deal by offering three 4-wheel drive systems. The base and the Laredo package came with the Command-Trac, which was a part-time 4-wheel drive system. The Laredo package also had the Selec-Trac option, which could be used on dry roads. That meant that the vehicle could be left in 4-wheel drive all the time.

The third option was the Quadra-Trac; a full time 4-wheel drive system.

In 1995, the Grand Cherokee V8 engine got some additional torque, and the 1996 V6 engine received a torque boost as well. In 1998 the new

V8 engine made its debut with 245 horsepower and 345 ft-lbs of torque. This Grand Cherokee update could hit 0 to 60 in 7.3 seconds, which made it the fastest SUV around.

Chrysler continued to upgrade engine choices. In 1999, a new OHC 4.7 with 265 horses and 325 ft-lbs of torque was introduced. It replaced the old push rod 5.2 motor V8, plus the basic 4.0 litre straight six was modified with ten more horsepower that same year.
